Serra

In the interior of the Algarve, the Serra comprises 50% of the total area and it is only sparsely inhabited. Many villages and farms are abandoned and forfeited. There are few places with locals. Most of them still live in the traditional way and are self-sufficient. They have a few sheep or goats, usually also a few pigs or chickens for meat, eggs and milk. They plant vegetables in small gardens and keep a few hives for their own honey. They sometimes make some money by selling articles made of Cork, Medronho or honey. Some of them still don´t have water or electricity in the house. The heater in the house consists of an oven where they bake the bread and the kitchen is at the same time their lounge.
