Southern Portugal is a wonderful destination not just for its glorious sunshine but also for its amazingly varied scenery. The Algarve's coastline stretches for 150 kilometres. There are flat, sandy beaches in the east and rugged, golden Cliffs in the west. These rise steeply out of the sea, sheltering the beautiful bays. Between east and west lies the Ria Formosa nature reserve, an area of lagoons, waterways and sandy islands, places of refuge for many rare species of birds and marine animals. The famous ' flor de sal' comes from the abundant salt flat areas. Then there is the west coast which stretches from the Cabo de São Vicente, the most south-westerly point of Europe, as far as Lisbon in the north. First you encounter the Costa Vicentina nature reserve which is home to many rare plants and animals. It features a rugged coastline and secluded bays which change seamlessly into endless sandy beaches stretching almost as far as Lisbon. Leaving behind the Algarve’s busy coast, you come inland to the hilly Serra region, a quiet, unspoilt area, thinly populated and with quiet, well surfaced roads, off road tracks and cycle paths - surely an all year-round paradise for all cycling enthusiasts!
